STEP 3: Once you take your written test and pass it, you will receive your California learner's permit. However, it is not yet valid as a minor permit until a state licensed driving instructor signs and activates it.

STEP 4: Begin behind-the-wheel training with a state licensed driving instructor who will validate the minor's permit after the first lesson (2 hours) by signing it. The minor can now begin practicing with either a parent/guardian or with an adult who is at least 25 years of age with a California non-expired driver's license. The instructor will give the minor a yellow certificate of completion upon finishing a total of 3 lessons (6 hours).
